University of Houston Students Protest Amid Campus Crime Wave
The University of Houston campus is experiencing a surge in crime, prompting student protests and increased security measures. The recent incidents have caused significant concern among students, who are demanding more protection from the university.
One particularly disturbing incident involved a man accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman in a parking garage on February 7th. The suspect, Eric Latroy Brown, was initially arrested but later released due to insufficient evidence. This has led to renewed calls for improved security on campus.
Increased security personnel and patrols across campus: The number of campus security officers patrolling 24/7 has been more than doubled.
Security officers have been stationed at six parking garages, 10 surface lots, and bike and scooter racks.
The university is working closely with law enforcement agencies and the District Attorney's office to investigate incidents and bring offenders to justice.
The university's CARE team is providing resources and support to victims of recent crimes.
Students are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the UH Police Department at 713-743-3333. The university is committed to ensuring the safety of its students and will continue to take steps to address the recent crime wave.

I support the increased security measures because any step to reduce campus crime is a step in the right direction.

Why are we only now scrambling for fixes? This crisis has been building for a while.

The university’s support network, especially the CARE team, is a much-needed resource for victims and the community.

More security officers are not a cure-all. The university should focus on education and environment improvements too.

They talk a lot about support and protection but fail to address underlying systemic issues that create crime in the first place.

I feel safer knowing that all suspicious activity is being taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.

Sure, more patrols might deter crime, but it’s a band-aid solution. What real preventive policies are being put in place?

It's heartening to see the campus community rally together with increased security measures to fight campus crime.

Relying so much on security personnel doesn’t solve the root problem of campus safety culture.

It’s about time the university took action. Doubling security shows that our safety truly matters.

If they really cared about our safety, the university would have taken preventive measures a long time ago.
