Russia Claims Trump-Putin Talks Saved the World from Apocalypse
Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's deputy chairman of the Security Council, made a bold claim on Thursday. He stated that the recent conversation between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin brought the world back from the brink of the Apocalypse.
Medvedev's statement comes amidst heightened tensions between Russia and the West following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. He criticized the West's united support for Ukraine and accused the United States of waging a "hybrid war" against Russia.
"It just so happened at some point that the U.S. appointed itself the country-in-chief on our planet with the exclusive right to wage a hybrid war against our people, to mete out justice and grant pardons," Medvedev said. "It was a grave mistake, which nearly wiped humanity off the face of the earth."
He continued by urging the "arrogant American elites and the so-called deep state" to learn from this experience. He warned that if they don't, "the Doomsday Clock will keep on ticking towards midnight," implying the possibility of nuclear escalation.
Medvedev's statement comes after Trump's announcement that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine would begin "immediately." This announcement followed comments by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said that Ukraine's membership in NATO was unrealistic.
European leaders expressed concern over both Washington and Moscow's pronouncements. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for full European and Ukrainian involvement in any peace agreement. She also warned against making quick fixes that could embolden China.
NATO defense ministers echoed Kallas' concerns and warned against falling under the illusion that Trump and Putin could solve the conflict alone. They emphasized the need for Europe to embrace its own economic, financial, and military capacity to determine its own future and that of Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his willingness to exchange land seized by Ukraine in Russia for land occupied by Moscow in eastern Ukraine. He also confirmed a conversation with Trump about achieving a "lasting, reliable peace.
