European Concerns Mount as Trump Pushes for Russia-Led Peace Talks in Ukraine
While European leaders presented a united front in their support for Ukraine at a recent defense ministers meeting in Brussels, concerns are growing that they may be sidelined by the Trump administration's push for a Russia-led peace plan.
European leaders and officials have emphasized the importance of Ukraine's involvement in any peace negotiations, stressing that the process should not be rushed to avoid weakening Ukraine's position. However, there are growing concerns among NATO allies that the United States may take a different approach, potentially pushing European nations to shoulder a greater financial burden for the peace plan.
President Trump's recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, described as "lengthy and highly productive," has fueled these concerns. The call, which did not mention a role for Europe or Ukrainian President Zelensky, has raised fears that the United States may prioritize its own interests over those of its European allies and Ukraine.
European Council President Antonio Costa has emphasized the need for both Ukraine and the European Union to be involved in any credible and successful negotiations. He stressed that peace cannot be achieved through a simple ceasefire and that Russia must no longer pose a threat to Ukraine, Europe, or international security.
