Japan Airlines and Delta Airlines Collision at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
On Wednesday, a Japan Airlines flight collided with a Delta Airlines plane while both were taxiing at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. in an area not under air traffic control, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Delta plane's wingtip was struck by the Japan Airlines aircraft.
The Delta flight was scheduled to depart for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with 142 passengers on board. Following the collision, the passengers deplaned and later boarded another aircraft to their final destination. The airport collaborated with both airlines to safely disembark passengers and transport them to the terminal. Incoming flights were temporarily paused due to the incident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
"We apologize for the experience and delay in travels," Delta said in a statement.
The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is monitoring the situation.
This incident follows a series of recent aviation accidents, including the tragic collision between an American Eagle regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River near Washington D.C., which claimed the lives of 67 people. Additionally, a medical transport plane crashed in Philadelphia, killing six people on board, including an 11-year-old child who had just undergone treatment at a local hospital.
In response to these events, Elon Musk, who serves as a "special government employee" heading the Department of Government Efficiency, announced plans to "make rapid upgrades to the air traffic control system." He claims that the FAA's primary aircraft safety notification system recently failed for several hours, and his team will be working to address these issues.
