In a strongly worded statement, Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel cautioned Hamas that the failure to release hostages as planned for Saturday would trigger a resumption of intensive military operations in Gaza. Although Hamas maintains that release plans have been indefinitely delayed in protest of what it claims are Israeli breaches of a cease-fire agreement, Netanyahu’s remarks underscored that the ongoing military operation would continue until its objectives were fully achieved; however, he was careful not to announce any plans for reclaiming additional territory.
Elsewhere, President Trump reaffirmed during a White House meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan that the United States intended to take decisive control of Gaza, with the expectation that surrounding nations would manage the influx of Palestinian refugees. Furthermore, he indicated that U.S. aid to Egypt and Jordan could be suspended should they oppose such a strategy, a stance that King Abdullah countered by reaffirming Jordan’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and residence of the Palestinian population.
Adding complexity to the situation, there have been renewed accusations from Hamas accusing Israel of neglecting a promise to supply hundreds of thousands of tents to Gaza. While the Israeli military unit responsible for overseeing aid deliveries dismissed these claims as completely false, several Israeli officials, speaking anonymously, hinted that there might be some basis to the allegations, underscoring the ongoing strains and disputes related to humanitarian assistance in the region.
