A Community Effort to Keep the Slopes Open
declining visitor numbers. With the number of domestic skiers and snowboarders dwindling, the resort's future seemed uncertain.
The lack of snowfall during the previous winter season dealt a major blow to the resort, causing visitor numbers to plummet by half compared to a decade ago. This, coupled with the resort's struggles to attract foreign tourists, led to financial difficulties. The resort's operator, Blue Resort Norikura, announced its intention to cease operations in October 2023.
However, a group of passionate volunteers refused to let the resort close. They rallied the community, raising over ¥50 million through online donations and crowdfunding. This outpouring of support allowed the resort to stay open for the current winter season.
The resort is now actively working to attract new visitors, offering free lift tickets for people under 18 years old. Recognizing the importance of foreign tourism, the resort is also exploring ways to improve its appeal to international visitors.
The future of Mt. Norikura Snow Resort remains uncertain, but the community's dedication and the resort's ongoing efforts offer a glimmer of hope. The resort's continued operation is crucial not only for the local economy but also for preserving the region's cultural heritage and providing a space for recreation and enjoyment.

It's a band-aid solution. The real issues lie in poor management and planning that should have been addressed long ago.

The resort might survive this winter, but without real changes, this is just delaying the inevitable closure.
