During a visit to a U.S. military installation in Germany, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was met with loud protests from military families opposed to his recent policy changes regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Approximately two dozen adults stationed at the base chanted and booed as Hegseth arrived at the U.S. European Command headquarters in Stuttgart, clearly expressing their displeasure with the administration's new DEI stance.
In a related event, about 55 students from a local middle school in Stuttgart organized a walkout to protest the administration's policies. The demonstration, which lasted for 50 minutes, was initiated by an eighth-grade student and was meant to highlight the cancellation of school events like Black History Month celebrations, as well as growing concerns for the LGBTQ+ community under Trump’s executive orders.
Since his confirmation, Hegseth has implemented several measures that have alarmed many within the military community; among these are the banning of Black History Month and restrictions on certain books available in defense department schools. In addition, in a recent memo, he declared that the U.S. military would no longer accept transgender service members and announced a pause on all procedures relating to gender transition, a move that has further fueled the protests.
While protests among military families are relatively rare, the recent outcry reflects significant discontent with the administration’s approach to DEI and broader social issues. Despite requests, a spokesperson for the Department of Defense did not comment on the protest actions, leaving many to question the future impact of these policy changes on military families and communities.

These policies are a blatant attack on inclusivity. Canceling Black History Month and silencing diverse voices only hurts our community.

Stopping transgender service members from transitioning is not about military readiness—it’s about intolerance and outdated views.

When leaders prioritize ideology over inclusion, they lose the trust and support of the very people they are meant to serve.

Finally, someone is prioritizing military discipline and readiness over symbolic celebrations that detract from our objectives.

If our military is scrapping meaningful diversity initiatives, then it’s losing touch with the values that make our society strong.

It’s disheartening when policies prioritize political agendas over the well‐being of military families and the principles of equality.

It’s refreshing to see leadership focused on the core mission rather than engaging in divisive identity politics.

These changes could help restore a sense of unity and professionalism in the military—sometimes tough decisions must be made.

It’s not about politics—it’s about recognizing and celebrating the contributions of all groups. This policy reversal is shameful.
