Bangladesh's BNP Party Speaks Out Against Interim Government
The powerful Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has publicly spoken out against the interim government for the first time since the recent surge of unrest and the subsequent security crackdown.
This statement comes after police arrested over 1,500 people nationwide since February 8th as part of "Operation Devil Hunt." This operation targets groups allegedly connected to ousted premier Sheikh Hasina, who was toppled in a student-led revolution last August.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP secretary-general, met with interim leader Mohammed Yunus on Monday to express concerns over the incidents sweeping the country.
On February 5th, protesters used excavators to demolish buildings connected to Hasina's family, including a museum dedicated to her late father, Bangladesh's first president. This occurred six months to the day since Hasina fled as crowds stormed her palace in Dhaka. Police stood by as protesters set the building ablaze.
"It all happened in front of law enforcement agencies, so the government cannot avoid its responsibility," Alamgir stated.
These protests followed reports that 77-year-old Hasina, who has defied an arrest warrant to face trial for crimes against humanity, would appear in a live broadcast from exile in neighboring India.

“This report reinforces my belief that the government has a responsibility to control lawless behavior—not excuse it.”

“Too much focus on dramatic headlines and not enough on the real issues. This story looks like propaganda.”

“Seems like the BNP’s rhetoric is being used as evidence rather than objectively analyzing the facts.”

“The article conveniently ignores other security challenges and only highlights incidents that favor BNP’s narrative.”

“This narrative clearly has an agenda; it doesn’t sit well that it personifies all acts of resistance as political crimes.”

“I support the call for justice. Authorities cannot simply stand by while chaos unfolds.”

“I’m not convinced by this account. A balanced report would include perspectives that explain why drastic measures were taken.”
