Global Leaders Discuss AI Regulation and Ethics at Paris Summit
US Vice President JD Vance addressed world leaders and tech industry chiefs at the AI for Humanity summit in Paris, urging caution against over-regulation of the AI sector. He warned that excessive regulation could stifle innovation and growth in this transformative field.
Vance's remarks came as dozens of nations signed a statement calling for efforts to flank AI technology with regulation to ensure its openness, ethical use, and global benefit. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for collective efforts to establish governance and standards that uphold shared values, address risks, and build trust.
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed Modi's call for global rules, stating that they are the foundation for the development and sustainability of AI. He emphasized the importance of balancing innovation and acceleration with responsible regulation.
The statement signed by 61 countries, including the US and Britain, outlines key principles for AI development. These principles include openness, inclusivity, transparency, ethical use, safety, security, trustworthiness, and sustainability for people and the planet.
Vance also raised concerns about the potential misuse of AI by authoritarian regimes for increased control of citizens. He cautioned against partnering with such regimes, as it could lead to dependence and infiltration of information infrastructure.
The summit highlighted the growing global consensus on the need for responsible AI development and the importance of international collaboration to ensure that AI benefits all of humanity.
