A Japanese finance ministry official lost documents containing personal information about nearly 200 people suspected of illegal drug dealings after a night of heavy drinking.
The official, who worked with the ministry's customs and tariff bureau, consumed nine glasses of beer during a five-hour drinking session last week. Upon returning home, they realized their bag was missing.
The missing bag contained documents with details of 187 individuals, including names, addresses, and information about their suspected involvement in drug smuggling and cannabis possession.
The official reportedly began drinking with customs staff in Yokohama, near Tokyo, at around 6 pm on Thursday.
The incident has caused significant damage to public trust in the ministry. The official in question will face severe punishment.
The finance ministry was unavailable for comment on Tuesday, which is a public holiday in Japan.
