US-India Strategic Dialogue Intensifies Ahead of Modi-Trump Meeting

Amid preparations for a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, the discussion centers on reinforcing bilateral ties between the United States and India. Both nations are keen to expand their partnership, particularly in sectors like economic advancement, technological innovation, and defense.

David Smith, Executive Chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, expressed admiration for Modi’s leadership and his pioneering use of technology to drive change, notably through the Mann ki Baat radio program. His remarks underscored how Modi has harnessed digital tools to enhance communication and promote societal development in India, inspiring many both domestically and internationally.

Smith also highlighted Sinclair’s long-standing efforts in enhancing India's broadcasting and communications framework. Over nearly a decade, the company has collaborated on projects aimed at enabling more efficient information dissemination across India's vast population, including the innovative Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology. This advancement, emerging from a Public-Private Partnership, significantly improves media accessibility by making free-to-air mobile broadcasts a reality for news, education, and emergency services.

Looking beyond media, the conversation expanded to a broader US-India alliance that touches on technology, defense, and trade. The leaders are working together on issues such as supply chain resilience, semiconductor production, artificial intelligence, and next-generation telecommunications, while also reinforcing their strategic trust through defense collaborations like arms agreements and intelligence sharing.

Despite the strong foundation of cooperation, Smith noted that some challenges remain. Disagreements in trade negotiations, regulatory matters, and spectrum allocation for new technologies suggest that even within a robust alliance, tensions can surface. Nonetheless, Modi’s visit is seen as a pivotal opportunity to renew commitments and set a forward-looking agenda that embraces shared innovation and strategic global leadership.

Relying on public-private partnerships is risky when it may reinforce corporate power over public interest.
