US President Demands Rare-Earth Minerals from Ukraine in Return for Aid
US President Donald Trump has demanded that Ukraine provide rare-earth minerals in return for American aid. In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that the US has invested over $300 billion in Ukraine and wants to ensure a return on that investment. He specifically mentioned Ukraine's rare-earth minerals, oil, and gas reserves as potential assets that could be used to compensate the US.
Trump claimed that he has reached an agreement with Ukraine to receive $500 billion worth of rare-earth minerals in exchange for aid. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine will only consider such a deal after Russian forces are pushed out of mineral-rich territories.
Ukraine possesses significant reserves of rare-earth elements, including lithium, titanium, and beryllium. These materials are crucial for various industries, including military, electronics, and energy. Before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Ukraine held Europe's largest reserves of titanium and lithium.
The presence of these valuable resources in Ukraine has become a key factor in the ongoing conflict. While the US and its allies support Ukraine with military and financial aid, Russia has cited the protection of people in Donbas, a region rich in natural resources, as a justification for its military operation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused NATO member states of being primarily interested in Ukraine's resources. He stated that their discourse revolves around acquiring territory and resources for the benefit of the US, while Russia's primary concern is the safety and well-being of the people in Donbas.
