Labour MP Oliver Ryan is scheduled to appear in the Chief Whip’s office as part of an investigation into his participation in a WhatsApp group, where offensive remarks were exchanged. The inquiry comes in the wake of unpopular comments made in a private group chat involving former Health Minister Andrew Gwynne, who has since been sacked and administratively suspended from his ministerial position.
Party officials, including Dame Angela Eagle, have stressed that the investigation is comprehensive, covering the entire conversation thread within the group. The process will allow individuals to clarify the context and timing of their comments. The Prime Minister has taken a decisive stance on the matter, emphasizing that such behavior is completely unacceptable.
In a statement, Mr Ryan admitted that the remarks he contributed to the discussion were inappropriate and expressed regret for not having challenged the offensive comments at the time. Although he did not review every message posted in the group, he accepts responsibility for his inaction and his own subsequent remarks, issuing an earnest apology for his behavior.
The WhatsApp group, reportedly named Trigger Me Timbers, was initially created by former employer and fellow MP Andrew Gwynne. The fallout from the controversy has prompted a broader examination of communication among Labour figures, with potential further actions pending based on the findings of the investigation by the Chief Whip.

“All this fuss over WhatsApp group banter seems overblown. MPs are human too; they shouldn’t be dragged under a microscope.”
