A Rural Revolt
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has launched a scathing attack on Labour's proposed inheritance tax increase on farmers, calling it a "nightmare" and backing the Daily Express's campaign to protect rural communities.
Farage will join tens of thousands of farmers on Monday in a mass "rural revolt" dubbed "The Battle for Britain." This demonstration has garnered support from farmers, business leaders, and politicians who warn that the policy could cripple British agriculture, drive up food prices, and devastate rural communities.
Farage warns that Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves' "relentless" assault will destroy communities across the countryside. In an exclusive article for the Daily Express, he labels their actions as "nothing short of a betrayal against our agricultural industry and rural communities."
He emphasizes that the campaign has evolved into a broader revolt against all forms of inheritance tax. "Labour promised not to raise taxes, to secure our borders, 'smash the gangs' and grow the economy," he states. "They have failed on every front. Now, we are all paying the price for Labour's reckless policies and disregard for the British public."
Farage highlights the crucial role of farming in the nation, providing essential food supplies and sustaining rural employment. "It is an industry we cannot afford to lose," he asserts. The farming industry employs 470,000 people nationwide and contributes over £11 billion annually to the British economy. When considering the broader food and drink supply chain, this figure rises to £120 billion per year.
Farage emphasizes that the attack on farming is "not just a rural issue — it is a national issue." He contrasts Labour's disdain for the countryside with Reform UK's commitment to prioritizing it.
The Brexiteer will join a hundred tractors on their journey to Whitehall, starting from Belmont Farm in North London. Protesters demand that MPs scrap the proposed IHT hikes, which they fear will force families to sell off their farms.
At the heart of the protest lies the government's plan to tighten inheritance tax relief on farmland. This, protesters argue, will lead to the break-up and sale of generations-old family farms to cover tax bills.
