A sudden drop in temperatures is set to affect various regions of Britain early Tuesday, with weather maps indicating that areas including Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Newcastle, and even London will witness significant snowfall. According to the forecasts, temperatures in some parts of the country could plummet to around -2°C, and wintry conditions are forecast to begin just after midnight, intensifying as Tuesday progresses.
In addition to the heavy snowfall forecast for several areas, more moderate precipitation is expected in cities such as Manchester and Birmingham, where light snow showers are likely to occur. The UK Health Security Agency has reacted by issuing a yellow Cold-Health Alert for the South East of England and parts of northern England, effective from the morning of February 7 until February 11, to remind residents to take precautions against the cold.
Meteorological explanations point to a cold airflow from the east/southeast, driven by high pressure over Scandinavia. This high-pressure system, forecast to remain in position for much of the coming week and into mid-month, is creating the conditions necessary for a chilly atmosphere. Early in the week, particularly in southern parts of the country, intermittent light rain and hill snow may accompany the cold, although drier weather is anticipated to establish later. Local weather experts have noted the continuation of patchy rain and hill snow into the early hours, particularly in the north and west, with a similar pattern expected for the following day, emphasizing the widespread nature of the cold and unsettled weather.
