Labour Minister’s Controversial WhatsApp Messages and the Investigation into Hate Incidents

Former Labour minister Andrew Gwynne’s WhatsApp messages, characterised by sexist and offensive content, have been recorded by Greater Manchester Police as a non-crime hate incident. Among the messages was a remark about hoping that a pensioner who did not vote Labour would die before the election, along with comments considered antisemitic and jokes about a constituent being struck by a truck. In response, Gwynne has been administratively suspended, and police are liaising with parliamentary contacts as part of their investigation.

The incident has drawn broader criticism towards the Home Office, which has faced scrutiny over its methods of recording such non-crime hate incidents. The practice has previously been condemned, notably during an investigation into a tweet by Telegraph journalist Allison Pearson, prompting the Home Office to promise a review of its procedures to ensure fairness and the protection of free speech.

Additionally, within the WhatsApp group, other political figures have expressed regret over the offensive comments. Newly elected MP Oliver Ryan apologised for not challenging the inappropriate jokes at the time, acknowledging personal shortcomings in addressing the matter and committing to cooperate with an ongoing investigation by the Labour Party. Home Office minister Angela Eagle confirmed that the Chief Whip would be engaging with those involved as the investigation continues, reflecting the Prime Minister’s strong stance against such remarks.

“This investigation seems designed to discourage any kind of humorous banter among our elected officials – an attack on free expression.”

“The texts are being taken out of context. Political commentary has always been rough-edged – this is no different.”

“I’m tired of politicians getting punished for offhand remarks that were meant as jokes. It’s political correctness gone mad.”

“I support the suspension. If you’re going to represent the public, respect and inclusivity shouldn’t be optional.”
