The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) has proposed a 2.8% pay rise for Members of Parliament (MPs), which would take their annual salary to £93,904. This proposal has sparked debate, with some arguing that MPs deserve the raise while others believe they should not be given a pay increase while the nation struggles with high bills and the cost of living.
Ipsa argues that the proposed pay rise is in line with the government's recommendations for a wider public sector pay increase and slightly above the current inflation rate. They also point out that MPs do not determine their own salaries, which have been set by Ipsa since 2011.
However, critics argue that MPs should not be given a pay rise while many people are struggling to make ends meet. They point to the fact that MPs have voted in council tax rises, slashed winter fuel payments, and slapped farmers with a new inheritance tax, all while energy and water bills continue to rise.
The proposal will be subject to a consultation until mid-March. Ipsa is also carrying out a wider review of MPs' salaries, which it is obliged to do in the first year after an election.

😠 MPs should not be rewarded for voting for policies that make people's lives harder. No pay rise!

😤 MPs voted for policies that hurt ordinary people and now they want a reward? Hypocrisy!

👍 MPs have a difficult job and the pay should reflect the responsibility they carry.

😠 Greedy politicians lining their own pockets while ordinary people suffer. Disgraceful!

👍 This pay rise is modest and in line with other public sector pay rises.

😠 The government is already struggling to manage the economy. Giving MPs a pay rise is irresponsible.

😡 MPs already earn a fortune! Give the pay rise to nurses, teachers, and other public sector workers instead!
