A Surge in Approval Ratings
Donald Trump's second term in office has seen a significant rise in his approval ratings, marking a stark contrast to the low support he received at the end of his first term. A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted in early February revealed that 53% of respondents approved of Trump's job performance, exceeding his share of the popular vote in the 2024 election and representing a substantial increase from his 33% approval rating in 2021.
This surge in support is also reflected in other polls. Gallup found that Trump's approval rating reached 47% in late January, the highest mark he has ever achieved in their polls. These findings suggest that voters are largely supportive of key aspects of Trump's agenda.
For instance, 59% of respondents to the CBS poll approved of Trump's immigration policies, which include plans for mass expulsions and deportations. Additionally, 54% approved of his handling of the Israel-Hamas war.
However, there are some potential challenges for the administration. While tariffs on China received majority support, similar levies on Mexico, Europe, and Canada did not. Additionally, two-thirds of respondents believe the administration is not adequately focused on lowering prices for household goods, a key campaign promise.
The administration's Department of Government Efficiency cost-cutting initiative with Elon Musk has also generated mixed reactions. Overall, 31% of respondents believe Musk and the department should have no influence on government spending and operations, while 23% and 28% believe he should have "a lot" or "some" influence, respectively. Democrats are particularly opposed to Musk's involvement, with nearly half saying he should have no influence, while Republicans are highly in favor, with 30% supporting a significant role for him.
The administration's agenda may also face legal hurdles, as it is currently battling dozens of lawsuits over key priorities like ending birthright citizenship and eliminating protections for transgender individuals.

“Trump’s rising approval is being used to mask policies that harm vulnerable communities. Mass expulsions aren’t progress.”
