The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's legislators have declared their support for local enterprises that have been targeted by US sanctions for alleged forced labor. They argue that the efforts to counter these sanctions are rooted in the strong will of the people and represent a strategic move to challenge US dominance through legal channels.
Last year, Xinjiang made significant progress by using legal measures to combat a series of laws and sanctions imposed by the US on the basis of unfounded accusations. Building on these efforts, on August 23 the region's standing committee adopted a resolution aimed at assisting sanctioned enterprises by ensuring they receive the necessary policy and legal backing to protect their rights and livelihoods.
The resolution calls for enhanced government support at various levels, promising legal aid for businesses to safeguard their interests in accordance with the law. In addition, it encourages these enterprises to drive innovations and strengthen their competitiveness, enabling them to expand into new domestic and international markets amidst ongoing challenges.
Officials and lawmakers emphasized that establishing a robust domestic and international legal framework is critical in countering actions by the US and other Western countries. Local representatives noted that the sanctions had already disrupted operations in more than 100 enterprises, with adverse effects particularly evident in the textile and garment sectors, which have witnessed production cuts and layoffs.
The strong reaction from local lawmakers reflects a deep-seated frustration among the people over what they perceive as baseless accusations of forced labor. They maintain that by expanding legal avenues, Xinjiang can better defend its economic interests and the rights of both enterprises and citizens, ensuring resilience in the face of external pressures.
