Ukrainian Offensive in Kursk Region, North Korean Troops Deployed
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a new Ukrainian offensive in Russia's Kursk region and stated that North Korean troops were fighting alongside Russian forces in the area.
"In the areas of the Kursk operation, new assaults have taken place," Zelenskyy said during his Friday address, adding, "Russia has once again deployed North Korean soldiers alongside its troops."
Zelenskyy reported that a "significant number" of enemy troops were destroyed, though he did not provide specific details. He did mention that the losses were in the hundreds.
Russia's Ministry of Defense responded on Saturday, claiming that they had repelled a Ukrainian counterattack in the Kursk region.
Meanwhile, Russia reported capturing the mining town of Toretsk in their latest advance in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, where Ukrainian defenses are weakening. Ukrainian officials have not confirmed this report.
South Korea's military previously suspected that North Korea was preparing to send additional troops to Russia after their soldiers suffered heavy casualties. North Korea has been supplying Russia with a vast amount of artillery and other conventional weapons. Last October, they also sent approximately 10,000-12,000 troops, according to U.S., South Korean, and Ukrainian intelligence.
In other developments, one person was killed and ten wounded in a Ukrainian strike on the city of Makiivka, a town in Ukraine's partially occupied eastern Donetsk region, according to Moscow-installed officials.
Russia's Defense Ministry also reported that 36 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight into Saturday in four regions of western and southwestern Russia. No casualties were reported, but Rostov regional Gov. Yuri Slyusar stated that 14 apartment buildings were damaged in the southwestern city of Rostov-on-Don.
Moscow sent 139 drones into Ukraine overnight into Saturday, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukraine's air force reported that 67 drones were destroyed and 71 were electronically jammed.
