A Celebration of Ability and a Catalyst for Change

A Spotlight on Ability and Inclusion

The Paralympic Games are a powerful platform for visibility and advocacy for the over 1.3 billion people living with disabilities worldwide. This group, representing about 16 percent of the global population, often faces discrimination and marginalization. The Paralympics provide a critical opportunity to challenge these perceptions and celebrate the athletic excellence and human resilience of these individuals.

The 2024 Paris Paralympics, which took place from August 28th to September 8th, served as a reminder of the importance of inclusion and recognition for people with disabilities. Despite its significance, the Paralympics often struggle to gain media attention and audience engagement. This lack of coverage contributes to a limited understanding of the athletes' journeys and achievements.

The impact of the Paralympics extends far beyond the sports field. For people with disabilities, it serves as a vital reminder of their right to participate fully in society. The 2008 Beijing Paralympics, for example, led China to join the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and implement laws to protect their rights. This demonstrates the transformative power of the Paralympics in sparking social change.

However, the need for change extends beyond the event itself. A broader societal shift is required to address the daily challenges faced by people with disabilities. This means recognizing them not as objects of pity or awe, but as individuals with the same right to participate fully in society.

The Paralympics embody the Olympic spirit of pushing boundaries and celebrating diversity. They challenge us to expand our understanding of beauty, ability, and inclusion. While the Paralympics alone cannot achieve this social change, they serve as a powerful catalyst.

creating a world where everyone is valued and respected.

“I’m not convinced that linking the Paralympics to political change is fair to other groups who also struggle for recognition. It feels exclusionary in another way.”

“I question whether putting so much focus on the numbers behind disabilities actually helps people with disabilities or just creates pity.”

“I worry that constantly calling attention to disability at sports events might inadvertently box these athletes into a single narrative.”
