Chinese public security officials reported a rigorous effort against cross-border gambling, investigating up to 73,000 cases and shutting down more than 4,500 online gambling platforms over the past year. The campaign extended to dismantling networks that solicited gamblers and operated underground banks for overseas gambling groups, including a high-profile case in Chongqing that led to the collapse of a gambling syndicate linked to operations in the Philippines.
Law enforcement across the country mounted four major operations targeting 45 significant cases, culminating in the apprehension of 11,000 suspects. The actions not only disrupted organized crime within China but also involved repatriating over 3,700 individuals suspected of running or supporting these illicit activities, ensuring that criminals operating beyond China’s borders were brought under closer scrutiny.
In addition to domestic measures, Chinese police enhanced cooperation with foreign counterparts to limit the reach of gambling crimes affecting Chinese residents. This collaborative approach involved departments such as foreign affairs, tourism, immigration, and financial institutions, aiming to target illicit payment systems, exploitative investment schemes, livestream gambling, and unauthorized lotteries.
Furthermore, China has recently intensified its fight against telecom fraud by joining forces with neighboring countries like Thailand and Myanmar. These efforts have led to significant operations, including the rescue of numerous victims from telecom fraud zones on the Myanmar border, highlighting a comprehensive strategy to curb transnational cyber and telecommunications fraud.

The government is overreacting. Gambling is not a major problem in China.
