Fudan University Unveils Advanced 5.0T MRI Scanner

A groundbreaking 5.0T magnetic resonance imaging scanner was unveiled at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, marking a significant advancement in the field of medical imaging for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Known as the "human microscope," this new full-body scanner is designed to enhance the precision in detecting and diagnosing malignant tumors.

Medical professionals emphasized the scanner's ability to produce high-resolution images of soft tissues, providing a detailed view of tumor contours, internal structures, and their relation to surrounding tissues. This level of imaging detail is crucial for clinicians in making accurate diagnoses and planning effective treatments without exposing patients to the risks associated with ionizing radiation.

Gu Yajia, the head of the radiology department, highlighted the scanner's ultra-high magnetic field strength and superior gradient system, which collectively enable imaging at sub-millimeter resolutions. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence aids in image sampling and reconstruction, further improving capabilities in early diagnosis, precise staging, tumor boundary delineation, and monitoring of tumor progression.
