Singapore’s Ministry of Health announced on February 7 that an imported case of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis has been identified. The case involves a five-month-old girl from Indonesia who was brought into Singapore on January 26 for specialized medical treatment. Born with a compromised immune system, she had previously received one dose of oral polio vaccine and one dose of inactivated polio vaccine while in Indonesia, where she began showing symptoms including fever, sudden weakness, and paralysis of her lower limbs in December 2024.
Following the onset of her symptoms, medical evacuation was arranged, and upon arrival in Singapore, she was promptly admitted to the National University Hospital and isolated for her safety and that of the public. Health authorities have reported that their investigations suggest a low risk of the poliomyelitis spreading within the community. To further mitigate any potential risk, the infant’s close family members and caregivers have been placed under quarantine as a precautionary measure.
Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by the poliovirus, primarily spread through the ingestion of food contaminated with fecal matter. The authorities are maintaining stringent infection control protocols and taking necessary steps to monitor and manage the situation effectively.

“It seems like a cover-up is possible here; the low risk statement might just be downplaying a much larger issue.”
