In Washington, President Donald Trump held a meeting on February 6 at the White House with David Buritt, CEO of the struggling US Steel. The company has been advocating for a decision regarding its long-delayed acquisition by Japan’s Nippon Steel, whose US$14.9 billion offer was previously rejected by former President Joe Biden. While Trump has consistently voiced his opposition to foreign buyouts of iconic American industries, he has shown openness to Japanese investments in other key sectors such as technology.
During his tenure, Trump has been vocal about preventing what he considered the loss of American industrial strength to foreign competitors, remarking on at least one occasion his firm stance against US Steel being acquired by a Japanese company. Despite this, representatives from Nippon Steel have maintained that their takeover proposal is well-aligned with Trump’s vision for a stronger United States, suggesting that the upcoming meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Trump might positively influence the deal’s prospects.
Alongside the discussions involving US Steel, other significant meetings were held at the White House. Executives from major companies, including Meta Platforms and FedEx, were also present, with discussions reportedly focused on advancing American technological leadership abroad. A spokesperson for Meta mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg’s visit was aimed at exploring collaborative efforts to bolster U.S. interests in global tech competitiveness.
