Manchester Airport's £1.3 Billion Transformation Nears Completion
Manchester Airport is undergoing a major £1.3 billion overhaul, with the next stage focusing on the modernization of Terminal Two. This ambitious project, first announced in 2015, has already seen the terminal double in size in 2021. Now, the airport is set to unveil a transformed shopping area called The Avenue, featuring 20 new shops, cafes, and bars.
Among the exciting additions are the LEGO Store, the Great Northern Market with its diverse street-food offerings, and the airport's first Wetherspoon pub. Luxury brands like Chanel and a Fever Tree bar will also grace the new terminal.
To enhance the passenger experience, the airport will implement state-of-the-art technology in its security scanners and expand the security area.
"Our transformation program has been 10 years and £1.3 billion in the making," said Manchester Airport Managing Director Chris Woodroofe. "We're in the final stages of finishing everything off to open it to the public later this year."
The transformation extends beyond Terminal Two, encompassing airfield modernization and a new road for improved access. Additionally, Terminal Three will see further development.
This ambitious project has generated thousands of jobs, including opportunities for apprentices starting their careers. An independent report predicts that the airport's expansion will create an additional 16,400 jobs by 2040.
The report also highlights a significant boost to the Northern economy, with Manchester Airport's contribution expected to soar by nearly 80% to £6.3 billion by 2040. This growth will be further fueled by a £2.9 billion increase in productivity for businesses utilizing Manchester's global connections.
The Terminal Two extension, which has already welcomed over 35 million passengers, received the prestigious UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles architecture award in 2023. With the completion of the transformation program, Manchester Airport is poised to become a world-class hub for travel and commerce.
