In the small Brazilian town of São Thomé das Letras, residents witnessed an awe-inspiring phenomenon known as "spider rain." This spectacle occurs when the Parawixia bistriata, a social spider species, creates massive, intricate webs during its reproductive and hunting phase.
Hundreds of spiders move across the web, suspended in the air, giving the illusion that they are falling from the sky. This phenomenon typically follows periods of high temperatures and fog. Colonies of up to 500 spiders cooperate to build their webs in tree canopies or elevated structures.
While the sight of a "spider rain" can be unsettling, experts assure that these spiders pose no threat to humans. They are not aggressive and play a crucial role in regulating insect populations and promoting biodiversity.
A video of the massive web went viral on social media, eliciting reactions of fear and surprise. Some suggested exterminating the spiders, while others made religious associations, considering it an apocalyptic sign. However, others joked that mosquitoes wouldn't stand a chance with so many spiders around.
Experts explain that some spider species build these giant webs as a strategy to capture large amounts of food or facilitate reproduction. These spiders are semi-social and group mainly during the reproductive period, which usually occurs from September to March.
During the day, they form a ball, and at night, they emerge and create the web, giving the appearance of a "spider rain." Their venom is not potent, and while a bite is possible if they are handled carelessly, it is not considered medically significant.
