Sunderland's New Wear Footbridge Nears Completion
The final steel section of Sunderland's New Wear Footbridge was carefully lifted into place in September, marking a significant milestone in the construction of this impressive structure. Now, the focus has shifted to placing deck panels onto the 250-meter bridge.
Each of the 91 concrete sections measures 10 meters wide and is carefully positioned using a specially designed trolley system. A crane lifts the panels onto the trolley, which then moves them to the correct position on the bridge. Once all the panels are in place, work will begin on the final parts of the bridge's deck.
This new footbridge is seen as the "fulcrum" of the ongoing £500 million Riverside Sunderland development, connecting the former Vaux Brewery site and the Sheepfolds. This ambitious project aims to transform 32 hectares of prime land in the city center over the next decade.
The development will include a new central business district, providing over 1 million square feet of Grade A office space, 1,000 new homes, and new leisure developments. Additionally, a world-class eye hospital, the Housing and Innovation Construction Skills Academy (HICSA), a riverside park, and a culture house are all under development.
Cllr Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for housing, regeneration and business at Sunderland City Council, believes the New Wear Footbridge will play a key role in transforming the city center. He highlights its accessibility benefits, connecting the Sheepfolds and the city center while reducing strain on the Wearmouth Bridge, a major transport artery.
Furthermore, Johnston emphasizes the economic benefits the bridge will bring, providing a significant boost to local businesses and reshaping the city's skyline. He expresses excitement about the ongoing development, anticipating even more cranes and projects coming to fruition in the near future.

I'm worried about the safety of this bridge. It looks flimsy and I wouldn't trust it in bad weather.

This bridge is just another example of gentrification in Sunderland. It's pushing out the working class residents and making the city unaffordable.

This bridge is just going to be used by tourists and cyclists. It won't be accessible to everyone.

What about the impact on the environment? This bridge is going to disrupt the natural habitat of the River Wear.

I'm disappointed that the council is spending so much money on this bridge when there are so many other problems in the city that need addressing.

This is a beautiful addition to the city skyline and will be a great attraction for visitors.
