The horrific incident occurred in the Congolese city of Goma, where M23 rebels captured the urban center in a swift raid. During the chaos, M23 fighters freed male prisoners at the Munzenze prison, following deadly gun battles with the Congolese army.
The released male prisoners then rampaged through the jail, breaking into the women's wing. There, they subjected the female inmates to unimaginable cruelty, raping, butchering, and murdering them. As thousands of male criminals fled, the jail was set ablaze, trapping many women inside and burning them alive.
The United Nations estimates that between 165 and 167 women, along with 28 young children, perished in this horrific event. Video footage captured the aftermath, showing acrid black smoke billowing from the prison complex and people fleeing amidst the sound of heavy gunfire.
"There was a major prison breakout of 4,000 escaped prisoners. A few hundred women were also in that prison. They were all raped and then they set fire to the women's wing. They all died afterwards."
The capture of Goma followed a rapid advance by the Rwanda-backed M23 through eastern DR Congo. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of conflict and the urgent need for peace and justice in the region.

“Before we accept this as fact, shouldn’t there be independent verification instead of relying on a single narrative?”
