Terrorist Attacks Deemed Likely, Public Transport and Tourist Areas Identified as Potential Targets

Travel Warning Issued for British Tourists Visiting Belgium

British tourists planning a trip to Belgium have been issued an urgent travel warning due to the ongoing threat of terrorism. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has advised that terrorists are "likely" to attempt attacks in the country.

This warning comes amidst heightened security concerns in Belgium, which has witnessed several terrorist incidents in recent years. The FCDO stated, "Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Belgium. There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets."

The main threat is believed to originate from extremists linked to Daesh, formerly known as ISIL. In October 2023, a terrorism-related shooting in Brussels resulted in two fatalities and one serious injury. This incident followed a suspected terrorist attack in 2022, where one police officer was killed and another wounded in Brussels.

Holidaymakers have been warned that potential attacks could occur "indiscriminately" across Belgium, including areas frequented by tourists. While Belgian authorities have successfully disrupted multiple planned attacks and made several arrests, the serious threat level necessitates heightened safety measures and vigilance in public places.

The Foreign Office has identified public transport, national and international transport hubs, music, sporting and cultural events, entertainment establishments, and nightlife venues as the most common places visited by tourists. Visitors are advised to closely follow the advice of local authorities, who maintain enhanced security measures under the Level 3 "Serious" threat status.

The public can expect an increased police presence throughout Belgium, and additional safety measures may be implemented. UK Counter Terrorism Policing provides information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.

The warning also highlights the potential for demonstrations and strikes, particularly in major cities, transport hubs, and around the Schuman area (EU quarter) in Brussels. While most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence. Additionally, violence has been reported following major sporting fixtures. Demonstrations by farmers can block major roads and cause traffic delays. Demonstrations in the Schuman area can affect access to the British Embassy and the British Consulate General.

“It appears to be more of a PR stunt to keep tourists away rather than a genuine travel advisory.”
