NATO has taken decisive steps to secure essential underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea by deploying a fleet of warships as part of an operation named Baltic Sentry. This initiative comes in response to several attacks targeting power cables, communication networks, and gas pipelines, incidents that many attribute to Moscow amidst the turmoil caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a recent statement to the UK Defence Journal, Dutch Commodore Arjen Warnaar emphatically warned that NATO's presence is not a passive one. “We’re here. We’re going to see you doing this. Stop it. If you continue, we’ll catch you somewhere along the line,” he declared, making it clear that any sabotage activities will be countered effectively.
Beyond warships, the operation includes the use of maritime patrol aircraft equipped for tracking and identifying vessels, as well as advanced technologies such as a fleet of naval drones. These combined capabilities underline NATO's commitment to protecting the region’s vital underwater networks against any acts of interference.
