Hardworking Brits Furious Over Asylum Seeker's Compensation
The TaxPayers' Alliance and Reform UK have expressed outrage over a High Court ruling awarding nearly £100,000 in compensation to an asylum seeker who claimed mistreatment by the Home Office.
Nadra Almas, a Christian from Pakistan, faced a 16-year battle to remain in the UK after overstaying her student visa in the early 2000s. She claimed she was treated "like a criminal" during her ordeal, leading to anxiety and a negative impact on her home life.
The High Court found "numerous" breaches in how Ms. Almas was treated by Home Office officials and at Yarl's Wood detention center. A judge ruled that the compensation of £98,757 was appropriate, despite appeals from the Home Office.
Shimeon Lee, a researcher at the TaxPayers' Alliance, expressed anger at the taxpayer burden resulting from "bureaucratic incompetence." He urged ministers to take control and prevent such costly errors in the future.
Richard Tice, Deputy Leader of Reform UK, echoed this sentiment, calling the situation "raging" and claiming British taxpayers are being "taken for a ride." He contrasted the asylum seeker's compensation with the removal of Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners, highlighting a perceived injustice.
Reform UK vowed to end such "abuse" of taxpayers and prioritize Britons' needs if they come to power after the next election.
Ms. Almas' case began in 2004 with a student visa that expired after five months. She received a removal notice in 2008 and made multiple attempts to remain in the UK until 2014. In 2018, she was detained by Home Office officials, handcuffed, and informed of her deportation, only to be released two weeks later.
The Home Office has yet to comment on the situation.

No one deserves to be treated like a criminal, especially someone who is just trying to build a new life.

The government should be ashamed of themselves for trying to pit British people against refugees.
