In recent days, residents across parts of Greece have experienced a series of tremors, culminating in a significant earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 that occurred between the islands of Amorgos and Santorini. The event followed two smaller tremors and was recorded at 9.09pm local time at a shallow depth of 5km.
Local authorities reported that over 11,000 people have evacuated the area around Santorini, with approximately 7,000 leaving by ferry and 4,000 by air as the community responds to the seismic activity. Schools on Santorini and other nearby islands including Anafi, Paros, Naxos, and Mykonos have been temporarily closed to ensure public safety.
Emergency teams specializing in natural disasters have been mobilized to the affected areas, with teams equipped with canine units and a mobile operations center arriving to support the response efforts. The incident has heightened the urgency of monitoring and managing post-earthquake conditions in the region.
