Tulsi Gabbard's Nomination Advances to Senate Floor
Tulsi Gabbard's nomination to become President Donald Trump's director of National Intelligence cleared a significant hurdle on Tuesday when the Senate Intelligence Committee voted to advance her nomination to the full Senate floor.
Gabbard's path to confirmation became clearer after Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Todd Young of Indiana announced their support for her nomination. During her confirmation hearing last week, both senators expressed skepticism about her positions on certain issues.
Senator Young, a retired Marine intelligence officer, questioned Gabbard's stance on Edward Snowden's leaking of information about U.S. surveillance programs. Gabbard repeatedly refused to label Snowden a "traitor." Democrats also raised concerns about Gabbard's visit to Syria's former president, Bashar al-Assad.
Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, expressed concerns about Gabbard's views on Assad's use of chemical weapons in Syria. However, Senator Young stated that Gabbard had addressed his concerns and that he would support her nomination.
Senator Susan Collins also announced her support for Gabbard, citing Gabbard's responses to her questions during the hearing and closed session. Collins had previously expressed skepticism about Gabbard's views on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Despite some Republican skepticism, Gabbard received unanimous support from Republicans on the committee. This support, combined with Trump's right to appoint his own cabinet, virtually guarantees Gabbard's confirmation on the Senate floor.
Gabbard's nomination comes amidst controversy surrounding other Trump nominees, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Kash Patel. Democrats have expressed concerns about these nominations, but Republicans appear poised to confirm them.
