LA Prosecutors Sue DA’s Office Over Retaliation in Menendez Case

Two deputy district attorneys from Los Angeles County, Brock Lunsford and Nancy Theberge, recently announced legal action against District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office. The lawsuit claims that the prosecutors experienced harassment, discrimination, and retaliation after they submitted a memorandum calling for the resentencing of convicted murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez. Their discontent grew when they were reportedly demoted to less prominent roles and subjected to online mockery by Deputy D.A. John Lewin shortly after putting forward their recommendation.

The Menendez brothers, infamous for the 1989 killing of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, have long been the subject of public and legal debate. Convicted for the murders and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, the brothers have continuously asserted that years of alleged sexual abuse led them to commit the crime. Despite serving 35 years in prison, the prosecutors now argue that new evidence and changing perceptions regarding their case warrant a resentencing that could potentially lead to their release.
