Triple Knife Killer's Care Marked by Failings, Report Reveals

A damning report has exposed a series of failings in the care of Valdo Calocane, the triple knife killer who murdered three people in Nottingham in 2023. The report, compiled by independent investigators, reveals that Calocane, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, was not forced to take long-lasting antipsychotics despite his violent history and clear risk to the public.

The report details a disturbing pattern of violent behavior leading up to the killings. Calocane held flatmates hostage, punched a police officer, and caused a neighbor to jump from a window, resulting in a serious back injury. Despite these incidents, Calocane was not adequately assessed or treated, and his potential for violence was not fully understood or communicated.

The report also reveals that between 2019 and 2023, there were 15 other incidents involving patients under the care of the same mental health trust who committed serious violence against members of the community. This includes a shocking case in February 2023 where a patient stabbed five people over a weekend.

The report's findings have prompted outrage and calls for accountability. The families of the victims have expressed anger and demanded full transparency. In response, NHS England has apologized unreservedly and pledged to improve the way people with serious mental illness are treated.

The report's recommendations include a review of risk assessment processes, improved communication between agencies, and the trialling of 24/7 mental health centers. These measures aim to prevent future tragedies and ensure that individuals with serious mental illness receive the care and support they need.

“While tragedy occurred, we must remember that treatment for severe mental illness is not as clear-cut as the article seems to suggest.”

“The language used is overly dramatic—calling it a ‘damning report’ can easily mislead readers about the real improvements already underway.”

“Highlighting horror stories without context only furthers stigma. We need to look at successes as well as failures.”
