A Legal Battle Over Transparency
A legal battle is brewing over the release of Prince Harry's immigration records, with a conservative think tank seeking to uncover whether he lied about past drug use or received special treatment when entering the United States.
The Heritage Foundation filed a lawsuit after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) largely rejected its Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for Harry's records. The lawsuit argues that the public has a right to know whether Harry was truthful on his immigration application, especially in light of his 2023 memoir "Spare" where he admitted to past drug use.
The case hinges on whether Harry disclosed his drug use on his visa application. US visa applications routinely inquire about drug use, and lying on such forms can have serious consequences, including deportation. Heritage's attorney argues that if Harry lied, he could be deported. Alternatively, if he was truthful and received a waiver or special visa, it could raise questions of preferential treatment.
The lawsuit is currently before U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, who is considering how to handle sworn statements from DHS officials explaining their opposition to releasing the records. The judge is also weighing whether to request additional records from the government and potentially involve an outside expert.
Heritage Foundation's head of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom, Nile Gardiner, has appealed to President Donald Trump to intervene and order the release of Harry's paperwork.
The outcome of this case could have significant implications for both Prince Harry and the public's right to access government information.
