IAEA Director-General to Visit Nuclear Power Plants in Japan
Rafael Grossi, the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will visit nuclear power plants in Japan from February 18th to 20th. This was announced by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya on Tuesday.
During his visit, Grossi will tour the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant and an interim storage facility for soil from radiation decontamination work, both located in Fukushima Prefecture. He will also visit the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata Prefecture.
Grossi will join researchers from China, South Korea, France, and Switzerland in monitoring the treated water being released into the Pacific Ocean by the Fukushima nuclear plant. This release has been a source of concern for neighboring countries.
Grossi is also scheduled to hold talks with Japanese government officials, including Iwaya. The discussions are expected to focus on Japan's efforts to decommission the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and ensure the safety of its nuclear facilities.
