In an innovative effort to put the abundant scallop shells produced in Aomori Prefecture to good use, 19-year-old Sakura Makikata from Hirosaki University is developing a toothbrush made of plastic blended with scallop shell powder. Working as a sophomore in the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science, she has been collaborating with Aomori’s municipal government and several partner firms since the summer of 2024 to refine prototypes for this eco-friendly product.
Her design incorporates plastic resin that contains 51% seashell powder, endowing the toothbrush with a smooth and pleasant feel while benefiting from the natural antibacterial and deodorizing properties of the shells. Sakura, who founded her own company in January, is currently raising funds through a crowdfunding campaign to cover production costs, with plans to launch sales around March.
The innovation not only offers a new way to create everyday products but also serves as a response to the global issue of plastic waste by repurposing a local resource. Sakura hopes that her toothbrush will help to unlock a fresh perspective on the value of scallops in Aomori, blending environmental sustainability with practical design solutions.
