Woman Sues Obstetrician for Negligence During Natural Delivery
A woman in Singapore is suing her obstetrician for negligence during a natural delivery that allegedly led to lasting injuries. Ms. Cherissa Cheng, 32, claims the injuries will affect future pregnancies and have already impacted her quality of life.
Ms. Cheng alleges that Dr. Khoo Chong Kiat, a senior obstetrician and gynaecologist, committed medical negligence and battery during her delivery. She claims he manually widened her cervix, applied pressure to her abdomen, and made an incision without her informed consent.
Ms. Cheng also claims that Dr. Khoo abandoned a planned emergency C-section and opted for a natural delivery, despite her concerns about prolonged labor. This, she argues, led to the injuries she sustained.
Dr. Khoo's lawyers dispute these claims, stating that he acted within the required standard of care and informed Ms. Cheng of the tear and its repair. They also argue that the birth of a healthy baby and Ms. Cheng's full recovery demonstrate the adequacy of his care.
Ms. Cheng is seeking damages for pain and suffering, the impact on her quality of life, and loss of future earnings for herself and her husband. The trial is ongoing at the High Court.

It's terrifying to think that trusting a doctor can lead to such devastating consequences.

It's important to remember that every birth is different, and complications can arise even with the best medical care.
