Meredith Nolan, a researcher, had spent three months at Palmer Station, a tiny American research base in Antarctica. During her stay, she studied the effects of climate change on zooplankton. In her free time, she cheered for her favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills.
Nolan's love for the Bills was evident even in Antarctica. She wore a beanie with a Bills logo and a blue poof on top when she went out on a boat to collect zooplankton in nets or hiked the receding glacier behind the station. Her hat served as a beacon for other Bills fans, connecting her to a community even in the remoteness of Antarctica.
As the A.F.C. championship game approached, Nolan found herself on a hulking research vessel called the Noosfera, parked in an Antarctic port. The ship awaited favorable sea conditions before venturing into the icy waters below the southern tip of South America.
Nolan was eager to return home after her long stint in Antarctica. However, she couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as she left behind the camaraderie she had found with fellow Bills fans at Palmer Station.
