Two men, Carlos Lucero and Pete Ysasi, were arrested after a brawl erupted in a New Mexico courtroom. The incident occurred during a hearing for Alexander Ortiz, a suspect in the murder of Lucero's niece.
Video footage shows Lucero charging at Ortiz and punching him, followed by Ysasi joining the attack. Family members and officers attempted to intervene, but the altercation escalated. A corrections officer was also punched while trying to break up the fight.
Lucero reportedly told deputies that he attacked Ortiz because "he killed my niece like a coward" and that "it was worth every moment." Both Lucero and Ysasi face charges of assault and battery on a peace officer.
The incident highlights the importance of courtroom security, according to Katina Watson, CEO of the Second Judicial District Court. Watson praised the officer involved for his quick actions in responding to the brawl.
Ortiz is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Alianna Farfan, in January 2024. Detectives reported an abusive relationship between the two and that Ortiz was upset with Farfan on the day of the shooting. He is also considered a suspect in another deadly shooting that occurred days later.
Ortiz has been charged with murder in Farfan's death and faces additional charges related to the death of 35-year-old Nicole Maldonado.

I can't believe these men think it's okay to behave like thugs in a courthouse. No one is above the law!
