A Career Resurgence
Joan Chen, once dubbed "the young Elizabeth Taylor of China," experienced a career slowdown in Hollywood as she aged. However, she has recently found a resurgence in her acting career, both in the United States and China.
Chen gained international fame in the 1980s and 1990s with roles in films like "The Last Emperor" and "Twin Peaks." However, she found that work opportunities in Hollywood dwindled as she got older.
"Things kind of dried up as I aged," Chen said. "I think I was that exotic flower in Hollywood. And once you pass a certain age, you're certainly not that."
Chen returned to China, where she had initially found fame as a teenager. Her ability to play roles in both English and Chinese allowed her to continue working consistently.
"I basically didn't come to LA for decades," Chen said. "I would travel to Australia or to China instead of traveling to LA."
In recent years, Chen has experienced a career resurgence in Hollywood. She has appeared in the FX series "A Murder at the End of the World," the coming-of-age indie comedy "Dìdi," and the Sundance movie "The Wedding Banquet."
Chen is grateful for the renewed opportunities and enjoys working in Hollywood again.
"I am really happy that I can be working here again," Chen said. "It's obviously a welcome thing.

I'm thrilled she's getting the recognition she deserves. It's about time Hollywood started valuing experienced actresses.

I'm glad she's happy, but I would have preferred to see her career continue in Hollywood without the need to move to China.

It's wonderful that she's able to use her ability to speak both English and Chinese to her advantage. She's a true global talent.

It's ironic that she calls herself an "exotic flower" given that Hollywood is notorious for objectifying and typecasting actresses based on their looks.

It's important to remember that Hollywood isn't the only place where actors can find success. Joan Chen's story is a reminder that there are opportunities everywhere.
