Trump Administration Buyout Offer Sees Over 20,000 Federal Workers Accepting
The Trump administration's offer of buyouts to federal workers has seen over 20,000 accept the deal, according to two administration officials. This figure, however, falls short of the White House's goal of 5-10% of the federal workforce taking the offer.
The White House expects a "spike" in the number of acceptances before the February 6th deadline, according to an official. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is expected to provide an updated figure at a later date.
The offer, sent via email last week, provides full pay and benefits through September 30th for those who choose to resign by February 6th. The White House estimates that between 100,000 and 200,000 federal employees will accept the buyout, based on the 5-10% target.
This number aligns with the average annual attrition rate of 6% observed by the Partnership for Public Service, which translates to over 100,000 federal employees leaving their positions each year.
Democrats and labor unions have urged workers to reject the offer, citing concerns about President Trump's authority to make the offer and the possibility of non-payment. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia warned federal workers against accepting the offer, stating that they would be "stiffed" by the President.
Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency have advocated for the buyout offer, suggesting the use of severance packages and early retirement to reduce the size of the federal workforce. The government has also been actively promoting the offer, encouraging civil servants to seek private sector jobs or use the 8 months to pursue personal goals.

This is a human rights violation. These workers have the right to a job and a decent standard of living. This offer is taking that away from them.

This is a chance to reward our best and brightest public servants. Those who choose to stay will be even more valuable to the government due to their experience and expertise.

Don't listen to the fear mongering! This is not about dismantling the government. It's about making it more efficient and responsive to the needs of the people.

This is a slap in the face to veterans. Many federal workers are veterans who have served our country with honor. They deserve better than this.

This is a sign that Trump is serious about draining the swamp. He's not afraid to take on the entrenched bureaucracy and make the necessary changes.

This is a victory for veterans. They will be able to use their skills and experience to find new jobs in the private sector.

This is a dangerous precedent. If Trump gets away with this, it will set a terrible example for future presidents who may want to dismantle other essential services.

This is just another example of Trump's incompetence. He clearly doesn't understand the importance of a strong and efficient government.
