Amazon has made adjustments to its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) websites and has paused several related programs, generating concern among employees about the tech giant's commitment to these values. In response to these worries, Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec, the Vice President of technology at Amazon Web Services (AWS), addressed staff in a meeting in late January, emphasizing the company's ongoing commitment to DEI initiatives.
Tomsen Bukovec acknowledged that the inquiry regarding DEI was one of the most pressing concerns among employees leading up to the meeting. She was initially unaware of the specifics of the changes made to Amazon's DEI websites but sought clarification internally and confirmed that there would be "no change" in the company's commitment to DEI programs. She reassured employees that the benefits associated with DEI initiatives would remain intact, stating, "We are not pulling back on DEI initiatives... There's no change to the commitment."
The AWS executive, who has been a significant figure at Amazon for nearly 15 years, pointed out that the adjustments were more about the language used on the websites rather than any substantive changes to the programs. Specifically, she noted that Amazon has consolidated certain content and removed less impactful programs that were not yielding significant results, rather than altering the benefits offered to employees. This reassured staff that crucial DEI offerings, such as transgender benefits, would continue unaffected.
Recent trends show that other major companies such as Meta and Target have scaled back their DEI efforts in response to heightened scrutiny, but firms like JPMorgan and Costco maintain their support for DEI initiatives. While there have been discussions in the media regarding Amazon's evolving approach to DEI, Tomsen Bukovec's communication intended to reinforce that the organization's core commitments remain unchanged. However, a spokesperson for Amazon refrained from providing detailed comments beyond reiterating the company's pledge to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

Following the lead of Meta and Target, who have scaled back DEI efforts? Not a good look, Amazon.

Calling on Amazon to reconsider this decision and recommit to its original DEI goals. It's the right thing to do for your employees and for society.

Amazon, you can't claim unwavering commitment to DEI while simultaneously making changes that seem like a rollback.

Transgender benefits shouldn't be the only focus. All aspects of DEI matter – racial equity, gender parity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and more.

Amazon continues to offer transgender benefits and other important DEI programs.
