Georgia Man Sentenced to 475 Years for Running Dogfighting Ring

A Georgia Man Faces Justice for Dogfighting Ring

Vincent Lemark Burrell, a 57-year-old man from Georgia, has been sentenced to 475 years in prison for running a large-scale dogfighting operation. A jury found him guilty of 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals.

Burrell's arrest stemmed from an extensive investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies. In November 2022, detectives discovered 107 pit bulls at his Paulding County home, with the dogs exhibiting varying degrees of health and aggression. Some were emaciated, while others were strong and aggressive.

The conditions in which the dogs were kept were appalling. Many were tied to trees and metal sticks, abandoned without food, water, or shelter. Others were found in Burrell's basement, living amidst dog excrement and enduring such extreme odors that authorities required protective equipment to enter.

The investigation uncovered numerous items associated with dogfighting, including a chicken used to bait the dogs, a dog treadmill, a breeding stand, and medication typically used by veterinarians. Documents linking Burrell's dogs to other known dogfighters were also found.

"Dog fighters operate hidden in plain sight," said Jessica K. Rock, an animal crimes prosecutor. "It is a despicable activity that is incredibly cruel to the dogs."

Paulding County District Attorney Robert Lane echoed this sentiment, stating, "If you come to Paulding County and you engage in evil acts, we are going to make an example out of you."

Fortunately, all 106 dogs were rescued and transported to animal rescue facilities for rehabilitation. None of the dogs had received medical attention or been vaccinated.

Former Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge expressed his gratitude for the successful rescue operation, stating, "I am proud of the teamwork that has been exhibited in this case and I am thankful that these dogs are safe now."

Burrell's lengthy sentence sends a clear message that dogfighting will not be tolerated. This case serves as a reminder of the cruelty inflicted upon animals in this illegal and barbaric activity.

I'm relieved to hear that the dogs were rescued. Burrell deserves every year he got! No animal should suffer like that.

Prison isn't going to rehabilitate him. We need better strategies to deal with offenders more effectively.
