Vesna Pejovic, a woman who lost her daughter and two grandsons in a mass shooting in Cetinje, Montenegro, in 2022, has dedicated herself to reducing gun violence in the country. However, her efforts were met with a setback on January 1, 2023, when another mass shooting occurred in the picturesque old capital.
The latest tragedy, triggered by a brawl in a tavern, claimed the lives of 13 people, including the gunman who used an illegal firearm. This incident brought back painful memories for Pejovic, who has been advocating for stricter gun control in Montenegro for the past three years.
"We had to relive all our horrors all over again," said Pejovic, 63. "It's like we're stuck in a nightmare."
Despite the setbacks, Pejovic remains determined to make a difference. She believes that stricter gun laws and better mental health support are crucial to preventing future tragedies.
"We can't let these senseless killings continue," she said. "We have to do everything we can to protect our children and our communities.

I'm tired of living in a country where I have to worry about my safety and the safety of my loved ones every time I leave the house.

We can't let the gun lobby dictate our policies anymore. We need to stand up and fight for what's right.

This is a tragedy that could have been avoided. We need stricter gun control, better mental health care, and responsible gun ownership to prevent future tragedies.
