A powerful explosion rocked a luxury apartment complex in Moscow, killing a prominent pro-Russia paramilitary leader from eastern Ukraine and his bodyguard. The blast, which occurred in the lobby of the Scarlet Sails residential complex on the banks of the Moscow River, targeted Armen Sarkisyan, the head of the boxing federation in Russian-occupied Donetsk and the founder of a battalion fighting against Ukraine.

According to Russian media reports, the bomb was likely hidden in a couch at the building's entrance and detonated remotely as Sarkisyan entered the lobby. Sarkisyan was critically injured and later succumbed to his wounds, while his bodyguard was killed instantly.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which Russian security services described as a targeted and "well-planned" assassination. However, Ukraine has been accused of carrying out similar attacks on Russian military officers and officials in the past.

Sarkisyan, who was wanted in Ukraine, had a long history of aiding pro-Russia forces in the country. He was born to Armenian parents in Horlivka, a city in Ukraine's Donetsk region that has been occupied by Russia since 2014. He gained further attention in Russia as the founder of the Arbat battalion, one of many irregular Russian military units that have fought alongside the Russian army since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The attack has sent shockwaves through Russia's elite, with some analysts suggesting it could be a sign of Ukraine's growing ability to strike deep behind enemy lines. The blast also represents a major embarrassment for Russia's FSB, which has struggled to prevent similar attacks in the past.

Investigators are currently searching for the attacker, who is believed to have posed as a courier or contractor to gain access to the gated luxury apartment community. The investigation is ongoing.
