In 2020, Meghan Markle decided to step away from her role as a senior member of the British Royal Family, but she has continued to share her experiences and reflections on her time within the monarchy for several months afterward. Since relocating to America with her husband Prince Harry five years ago, Meghan has not hesitated to voice a range of allegations against the Royal Family, like those made in the highly publicized Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021, followed by their Netflix docuseries, "Harry & Meghan," which was released in late 2022.

In this docuseries, Meghan discussed the supposed limitations imposed on her as a result of her marriage to Harry, including adherence to an unwritten rule regarding color choices for her outfits. She explained that she adhered to a neutral color scheme of "camel, beige," and "white" in public appearances to avoid overlapping with the attire of more senior royals, including the late Queen. During one segment, she remarked, "To my understanding, you can't ever wear the same color as Her Majesty if there's a group event," suggesting that royal family members should avoid matching colors with one another.

However, shortly after these statements, Meghan's claims were challenged when Princess Kate and Zara Tindall attended a Christmas carol service wearing similar deep burgundy coats, a clear contradiction to Meghan's assertion regarding outfit color rules. This incident highlighted that, contrary to Meghan's claim, the Princess of Wales has often been seen in colors that match those of her daughter, Princess Charlotte, further questioning the validity of the alleged dress code for royal events. The Royal Family has not issued a formal response to Meghan's claims about these supposed outfit regulations.
