President Trump Fires Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra
In a move that further cements his administration's control over regulatory agencies, President Trump has fired Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Chopra, a holdover from the previous Democratic administration, was one of the more prominent regulators still in office since Mr. Trump took office in January 2021.
Chopra's firing was announced in a letter to the president that he shared on social media. In the letter, Chopra expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as director of the CFPB, highlighting the agency's critical role in protecting consumers and ensuring a fair financial system. He also emphasized the importance of agencies like the CFPB in a time when power is concentrated in the hands of a few.
Chopra's dismissal comes as no surprise, given his outspoken criticism of the Trump administration's policies and his close ties to Senator Elizabeth Warren, a frequent target of the president. During his tenure at the CFPB, Chopra led the agency in holding Wall Street accountable for its predatory practices and preventing the de-banking of Americans across the country.
Despite his five-year term, Chopra had previously stated his intention to step down if the new president requested his resignation. In his farewell letter, he expressed his hope that the CFPB would continue to serve as a pillar of economic liberty in America.
Consumer advocacy groups have praised Chopra's work at the CFPB, highlighting his dedication to protecting consumers and securing billions of dollars in relief for those who have been cheated out of their money. His departure leaves a significant void in the agency's leadership, and it remains to be seen how the Trump administration will fill the position.

If Chopra couldn't get on board with the president's policies, then he shouldn't be in that position!

I'm shocked and disappointed that a man who fought for consumers was removed for doing his job.

I can’t believe he let go of someone who was actually trying to hold Wall Street accountable!

How can we trust this administration when it keeps firing those who advocate for the public?
